By this we understand, upon hearing the word of God, the first step in the pursuit of salvation is to change our mind and purpose. In order to consider coming under subjection to our Creator, we must be willing to change the way we think. After all, thoughts lead to action, right? We can't expect to turn from wickedness to righteousness without changing our actions, right? Many people who have never read the bible already know that, don't they? Reading the word of God, hearing His call to righteousness, recognizing we are sinners, developing a heart of contrition, humbling ourselves and obeying our Maker requires us to change our mind and purpose.
